Representatives from World Vision and Educational Research and Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation, Inc. are now in the process of identifying recipients for the Ang Pag-aaral ng Bata para sa Kinabukasan (ABK3) project.
ABK3 project is intended to help the children and households in the sugarcane areas.
Seven areas in Iloilo province have been identified for the project, namely, San Enrique, Anilao, Barotac Nuevo, Dingle, Passi City, Dueñas and Banate.
World Vision targets around 5,000 children from the said towns who are either engaged or at risk in the sugarcane industry.
The project aims to reduce exploitative child labor through provision of direct education, livelihood, social protection and youth employment services and linkages to support services.
ERDA project manager Florence Pasos said aside from helping the children in their schooling, they will also help the parents by providing them with livelihood.
The group visited Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. and Provincial Administrator Raul Banias on January 24, 2012 to formally present the ABK3 project.
Defensor assured full support to the project which he recognized as a big help to the families engaged in the sugarcane industry.
He acknowledged the existence of rampant child labor in the sugarcane industry which could be traced back even before the Martial Law years. (ECGarcia/ Capitol News)
